On Wednesday, 9th March 2011, An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, announced the appointment of Frances Fitzgerald TD, as Minister for Children and the establishment of a new Department of Children.

The functions and priorities of the Department of Children and Youth Affairs are now the responsibility of Minister for Children, Frances Fitzgerald TD.
