Study Title A31 National Perinatal Reporting System (NPRS)
Data Owner Department of Health (www.doh.ie) and the Health Service Executive (www.hse.ie).
Description The National Perinatal Reporting System (NPRS) collects data on approximately 72,000 birth records each year from 20 Maternity Units and all registered community independent midwives. Information collected includes morbidity, mortality and socio-economic data.
Primary Function The provision of national statistics on perinatal events.

Start Date 1999, when the ESRI was contracted by the Department of Health and the Health Service Executive to oversee the collection, processing, management and reporting of data submitted to the NPRS. Prior to this, the system was managed in the Department of Health.

Format Separate record for each birth
Method Part 3 of the Birth Notification Form (BNF) is submitted on paper or electronically.
