Comhairle na nÓg

Comhairle na nÓg, which began in 2002, are local councils for children and young people (aged 12-17) that give them a voice on the development of local policies and services. They are the recognised national structure for participation by children and young people in decision-making in all 31 local authorities. They are supported by the DCYA Comhairle na nÓg Development Fund and DCYA Participation Officers.

Comhairle na nÓg Development Fund

The Comhairle na nÓg Development Fund is administered by Pobal on behalf of the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA). The fund supports structures that provide children and young people with a voice on topics that affect their lives at both a local and national level.

Comhairle na nÓg is a forum for structured input into decision-making by children and young people in the development of local services and policies to be supported and resourced appropriately by relevant statutory and voluntary organisations in the county/city.

The fund assists local authorities to support and develop Comhairle na nÓg by creating:

  • A firmly embedded structure and key consultative/participative forum for children and young people in each County.
  • An effective mechanism for children and young people to improve their own lives in partnership with adult stakeholders.

In collaboration with DCYA, Pobal administers the Comhairle na nÓg Development Fund, from the application stage through to managing payments and reporting of approved Comhairlí.
